Gail loses another one!

In ITV’s Corronation Strett, Gail Platt is famous for her lack of success with men: she is now up to marriage number 5! And in true soap style, none of them have ended happily (well, marriages just don’t end happily, do they?).

In marriage number one, Gail Potter became Gail Tilsley. They later divorced after her affair with Ian Latimer, amid Brian’s doubt that he was the father of Sarah-Lou. They later re-married (making this Gail’s second marriage), before Brian was tragically killed in a stabbing. Marriage number 3 was to toy-boy Martin, making her Gail Platt. In this marriage, it is Martin’s second affair that ends the marriage. Thrice bitten, but still not shy, Gail marries the psychopathic murderer Richard, making her Gail Hillman and onto her forth marriage. As viewers will know, this marriage was doomed from the start, as the clearly unhinged Richard plunged the whole family into a canal in a bid to end all of their lives.

And after all of this drama, normal people would think that Gail would give up on the idea of marriage, as she clearly has horrendous taste in men. But nope, man number 5, Joe McIntyre, has popped the question and got her to registry office on time. And now he is trying to fake his own death to get out of debt! And in real Corrie style, this plan is bound to backfire and catch Gail head-on.

Can Gail pick them or what?!

Verizon and SBC Communications attempt to stream TV content via fibre-optic using internet technology

Companies like Verizon and SBC Communications have made attempts to distribute TV content over fibre-optic networks using internet technology. This has proved to be one communication channel competing with cable and satellite to broadcast TV content to homes. IPT (internet protocol television) is now been taken up by Akimbo systems which is attempting to deliver TV over broadband and this comes as a output to your TV rather than computer making it much more appealing. The Akimbo box looks and functions like a TiVO and you need a receiver and a subscription package. Once set up the program is very similar to what you get from cable.

UK government to regulate content of advertising and broadcasted content

In the UK the government has set up a body to regulate the content of advertising and broadcasted content.  The restrictions have applied since the early days of TV and as a result only ITV, Channel 4 and 5 can show an average of 7 minutes of advertising per hour.  As a result any of the programs from the US have to be edited to as the TV breaks were originally intended for US channels and US advertising breaks.  The rules for advertising extend to which programs can or cannot have adverts – such as the news or current affairs program, documentaries and programs for children.

TV Licensing Law

Most people think of the need for a TV license if they watch TV on a plasma, or ‘normal’ tv.  However as technology progresses, new developments also make it possible to watch TV on more devices than ever – as such you still need to check If you are properly licensed.  If you watch any programme while it’s being broadcasted then by law you still need to be licensed even if it’s via the internet, mobile or any other device.  However, if you use the on demand services that are now available such as the ITV I Player, 4 on Demand or the BBC’s version.  The same rules apply if you use a video or DVD recorder to watch or record programmes as they are shown on TV.

Are we paying to much for our TV Licence

Like so many of us we enjoy watching our TV shows on television but so many of us take this for granted and actually forget that that we have to pay for this the main corporate being students who don’t realise that just because they live in student homes and accommodation they don’t have to pay for a TV licence.

From the first of April 2009 the licence fee went up to £142.50 for colour and £48.00 for a black and white TV License. If you ask me for those who are still watching a black and white TV the license fee should be free for not getting with the modern day times.

Television losing older audience to radio

It seems that the older generations are retroactively moving from the latest technology to a more classic form of entertainment, as statistics show in increase in the number of older people who are tuning into radio stations rather than television channels.

In particular, Radio 4 has witnessed a sharp growth, reaching record listener numbers of 10.22 million, which is up from 9.45 million last year. It is thought the radio station, which has an average audience age of 55, has seen the boost in popularity due to ‘ageist’ television entertainment. Critics have claimed that there is little on the television to cater towards older people, leading to the ultimatum of them seeking alternative sources of entertainment.

Xbox 360 Sky Player goes live and malfunctions instantly

Those of you with an Xbox 360 games console may have heard about the upcoming Sky Player update that was due to launch today. Well, the good news is it did indeed actually go live earlier today. On the flipside, the service isn’t actually working.

There is rumoured to be a problem with Sky’s distibution servers and Xbox 360 users are facing an error when they try to start the application.

The co-operation between Sky and Microsoft means people can pay for a Sky subscription and watch live tv, as well as a host of on demand content like films and television programmes. If you are a current Sky subscriber you will also have access to your current packages, but you need multiroom if you want to watch live TV.

Late night TV viewing may cause depression

A study into the affect of artificial light on emotions ahs discovered that replacing natural light with other light sources results in depression-like symptoms.

Researches discovered that mice who were exposed to unnatural light all day, rather than a normal day-night light cycle, were prone to tiredness and an overall lack of energy. The study, carried out by Ohio State University, gave late night television as one example of where this occurs in human lifestyles:

“This is important for people who work night shifts, and for children and others who watch TV late into the night, disrupting their usual light-dark cycle,” said Laura Fonken, lead author at Ohio State University.

California may ban large screen TVs

One of the big technological trends over the last decade has been revolving around televisions. People just keep wanting the biggest and the best, and when they get it, a new bigger and better one comes out to compete with it. The problem with these larger sets is that they are needing more and more electricity to keep them running, which is a point of concern that has been raised by Calofrnia’ energy commission.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has agreed to proposals put forward by the cenergy commission in California, to impose energy consumption limits on televisions 40 inches wide or more. The commission claims that 10 per cent of Californias domestic energy consumption is caused by the 35 million tvs in use in the state. This may lead to a similar restriction impose on televisions that is already in place on other home appliances, such as refrigerators.
